We began our introduction of Web 2.0 at a faculty inservice day. We shared the following powerpoint with the entire faculty:

Goal –

We will encourage faculty, through professional development, to embrace technological innovations to meet contemporary challenges. By using 21st century tools, we will engage students in experiences that will develop maturity, independence, adaptability, integrity, and a love of learning.

Steps-

We will actively encourage individual teachers to use these tools in the classroom.

Faculty in technology leadership positions will keep apprised of new ideas and strategies.

Individual teachers are targeted to incorporate new strategies in their classrooms.

Success stories are shared with the entire faculty through inservice meetings and the faculty Ning.

The Ning will be used by faculty to provide help, communication, troubleshooting, and collaboration in the effort to expand the use of new teaching strategies.

Communication on the Ning will be used to identify needs for workshops.

A technology survey will be used to gather baseline data on the use of 21st century tools and to measure annual progress.

Evaluation-

We will create and use an all school Ning as a support/reference/means of communication among the faculty. We will also use a technology survey. This survey, given once a year, will help us see how the faculty is progressing and will help us decide what workshops will be needed for professional development. NING

MA Network: Social Networking for Professional Development

The purpose of our Moravian Academy Ning is to provide a forum for faculty to ask for help, communicate, troubleshoot, and collaborate in the effort to expand the use of new teaching strategies. This would be a place where information and discussions are threaded and are available and archived for the whole school. Videos, photos, and websites are some of the items that can also be shared. It is a place where our school can come together as one.

Uses:

share ideas, share success stories, promote the idea of expert voices on a particular tool/teaching strategy, summer reading discussions, posting of new tools and strategies, learning about new ideas, getting help when you have a question or problem, requesting workshops.

Administration:

Set up and development of the Ning will be done by the ADVIS cohort members.

Monitoring the Ning will be the responsibility of the Coordinator of Educational Technology with help from the ADVIS cohort members.

Initially, the Ning will serve as a general forum for the entire faculty. Discussions can take place and information can be uploaded for all to see and share.

Using the ning:

All members of the faculty and administration will join the Ning and develop a personal page. Others who have external email at the school such as support staff, secretaries, nurses, etc. will also be given the opportunity to develop a page.

The Ning site will be introduced at an all school meeting with additional small group time set aside for individual set up and practice.

We would like to use it as a means of communication about our summer reading.

The administrator of the Ning, along with the members of the ADVIS cohort, will encourage individuals to post comments on the Ning to highlight specific ideas, tools, strategies, etc, in order to foster communication and collaboration through the Ning.

There will be a link to this Ning on first class.

These are our initial goals. There are more aspects of Ning to explore, and these would be introduced throughout the school year by the PLP group. Initial introduction would be at the Headmaster’s meeting day when we have time to talk, and initial login by faculty would be done at the end of the year meetings, in coordination with the directors.
